Signs of hope: the Strongtower project, Wigan

The Strongtower project runs two converted buses, which serve as Mobile Media Centres in the Borough of Wigan. Over 5,000 young people in the Wigan area have used the buses in the six months since the project started and funding has just been received for a third bus which will cover the Leigh area in partnership with the Westleigh High School.

The project is run as a partnership between the Deanery Church of England High School, the Standish Methodist Circuit and other partners in the Wigan area. Other local agencies involved include Wigan Warriors, Wigan Athletic, ASDA, Unison, Age Concern, AMF Bowling, JJB Sports, and Wigan Social Services.

“Mobile Media Centres are an exciting way of reaching out to the community,” explained Bishop Doye Agama. “They provide learning about how to gather and use information creatively. Each bus is equipped with ICT and digital media tools, computers, minidisk players, portable video cameras and facilities for producing radio, video and newspaper outputs. Trained staff are on hand to deliver taster sessions and media related training and with the overall aim of helping people to develop ICT competency and supporting them in their learning.”

If you wish to book the Mobile Media Centre or find out more about becoming a partner in this project, please ring Paul Fenton on 0770 8314 959, or contact Bishop Doye Agama on 01942519759 or 07759624514.
